MONROEVILLE, PA, April 8, 2008—Are you smarter than a 5th grader? Linda Sante, Parkvale Bank’s School Savings Administrator, often has had the opportunity to test her skills with area 5th graders on a daily basis through Parkvale Bank’s School Savings Program. During the 2007-2008 school year Sante presented the forty-minute program to approximately 2,777 students in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties, Belmont and Jefferson counties in Ohio and Brooke County in West Virginia.
During the presentation, which is presented in a fun and interactive manner, Sante answers basic questions like: “Why does one need a bank?”, “Why open a savings account?”, “What is interest?”, and “What is a Debit Card?”.
Sante recapped her experiences by saying, “It’s true. Kids think money grows on trees… or at least inside an ATM! One of the more difficult concepts to explain is where the ATM money comes from as it’s dispensed. Very few understand that this transaction is a withdrawal from their account and will lower their balance.”
